A Conversation with Pastors

Written by srockk on . Posted in Road Trip

“Hello everyone, Buster Broadway here at the Barrytown Campus at the Lead with Impact 2013 Conference with a lot of local leaders and directors. They all have a lot on their minds and they’re meeting to see what this conference can bring to their region and how it can help them out.”

Enter Pittsburgh!

Driving back we stopped over at Shipshewana, the heart of the Northern Indiana Amish community. Interesting town! The Amish dudes in the horse and buggies were interesting because a) they were in a black carriage, pulled by a live animal, and b), they would be wearing contemporary clothing and sunglasses with full beard in tow. Im not entirely sure how institutional their reticence for contemporary culture/technology is, but its interesting to see the middle ground they’ve navigated. So…motorized vehicles and cell phones are a no go, but Levi’s and Ray Bans are totally fine.

The Art of Taka Cooper

Written by srockk on . Posted in Road Trip

Yesterday was an adventure and a half. We started a little slow with some technical difficulties but that couldn’t hold us back. We got some Dunkin Donuts, then to Hanover Park to collect Taka Cooper. Our final destination was Taka Sushi, his parents’ sushi restaurant. With his wall of art as the backdrop, we interviewed him about his work and process. After the work was done, his mom then blessed us with some sushi. My favorite was the “Sexy Mexican” variety: avocado, spicy tuna, green peppers, and cilantro. Oh baby it was lovely. After getting irresponsibly full on sushi we headed back to Taka’s place where he showed us his workspace.

Back at Taka’s, he decided he wanted to get a tattoo on the back of his leg, and asked me to do it! I’ve never tattooed anyone before, but when has that ever stopped anyone? I drew out a squid man in a tuxedo holding an assault rifle and he gave me the ok to transfer it to his leg. I’ve drawn on a lot of different surfaces so far but human skin is the oddest. Taka was gracious enough to lay on the bed and continue with the interview whilst getting stabbed by the needle. What a champ.

mein gott zis PIZZA IST GUT.

Hello All. Buster here… here’s the vid of us experiencing the pizza of giants, Chicago’s deep dish pizza at Giordano’s in downtown Chicago.

Just so you know where I stand spiritually, I believe all pizzas go to Heaven. Except for ones that have black olives on them. Those go to Hell.

Onto The Next One!

Last night we interviewed the Vincenz family about their experience pioneering the early movement in the 60’s. I was personally struck by their perspective, presented to us from their unique experience in the church so early in the game. It was apparent that there was a wealth of knowledge there and that we only skimmed the surface. It’s gonna be a ton of work to edit all of that content, but Cat Buckhout and Yofred are on the task.

Our next stop is a tattoo artist by the name of Taka Cooper. We’re gonna check out some of his tattoo art and see what it takes to be in his line of work.

Until next time!

Chicago Church + Joint Ohio/Chicago Youth Service = Da Bears! (success)

Written by srockk on . Posted in Road Trip

After getting a paltry few hours of sleep we rolled out of bed, got gussied up, and drove to the Chicago Church. Lo and behold, the service was held at a movie theater. We set up our table next to the big Monsters Inc. cardboard promotion. I think it went well! I felt like we connected to the community there, plus we got a ton of positive feedback and quite a few signed up for a subscription on the spot!

Next stop was a change of clothes at the Ogden’s – we grabbed our gear from the house and ate some lunch. We had to be quick about it so Taco Bell was the decision. I opted to be marginally ghetto and bring the Giordannos leftovers into the Taco Bell. Sometimes you gotta roll the dice.

We were invited to a joint Ohio and Chicago youth service in the UC Learning Center. Connecting with young people in the Church is paramount to implementing UC magazine’s vision, so we knew this was the place to be. We made some friends and listened in on one of the group discussions. Deep kids, good time. BTW, We’re all going bowling Tuesday night…so if you’re a Chicago BC fixin’ to have a good time on a Tuesday night, look no further. Will update with the details.

We Have Arrived!

Written by srockk on . Posted in Road Trip

GUESS WHERE WE ARE. Yes, indeed we have felt the crisp, decisive gusts of the windy city and have partaken of the plump fruit of it’s branches: the deep dish pizza.

First things first: We went to Giordano’s Famous Chicago Style Pizza and ordered the “Classic Chicago”. It had everything we wanted: pepperoni, onions, peppers, mushrooms, and we got to say “when in Rome” a bunch of times. Tourists.

Off to meet Chris Ogden, who will be our host for tonight. Apparently he traveled for 6 or 7 years. I interviewed Chris and his brother John as they traveled as a duo for most of those years. The video interview is coming soon so check it out! After the interview I realized my travelling needs some serious leveling up.

Onto dinner at Mr Naka’s house with Chris and John for an on-the-fly Moonie meal. It was delicious! What gracious hosts the Nakas were! CHICAGO IS ALOT BETTER THAN BARKEYSVILLE.

We’ve set up camp in the Odgen basement and are editing videos and photos from the day. They have an N64 here with Perfect Dark. Props are given.

See you at church tomorrow!

Finally Free From The Chains Of Barkeysville, PA

Written by srockk on . Posted in Road Trip

What an interesting day… after ten hours of sitting tight at fast food joints and small town restaurants, stealing wifi, twiddling our thumbs, and watching episodes of season 2 Game of Thrones, our turmoil has come to an end. Our Charger is now right as rain, and we are currently at an Econolodge in Holiday City in OHIO. Thats right, we’re finally in Ohio. Only a few more hours to go…

Here’s the first hand account of a Dodge Charger fainting from exhaustion. We’ve been at this King’s Restaurant in Barkeysville, PA for what seems like an eternity, waiting for word from the mechanic…

Chicago…so close, yet so far away.

Written by srockk on . Posted in Road Trip

It seems like the Road Gods have not smiled upon us this day! Our trusty Charger won’t start and is being towed off to a local mechanic here in Barkeyville, PA. Hopefully it’s not too serious and our plans don’t get stymied too much… We wanted to be eating deep-dish pizza in the gusty streets of Chicago by TONIGHT. We’ll see… It looks like the Cleveland Aquarium is gonna end up on the chopping block and our visit to the Amish country is gonna get pushed to our trip back to New York. Gotta keep on rollin’, whatever happens we’ve gotta get the word out about the mag!

Aaaaaand we’re off. And what better vehicle to take on a road trip than a Dodge Charger. The safest, most gas efficient car on the market! Cat grapples with the perils of commercial packaging as his laptop needs charging. Chicago here we come!

It has begun!

Hello All,

UC Mag Road Team here, writing from a particularly stuffy motel room in Grove City, PA. What are we doing all the way out here? We’re here because we’ve embarked, as ambassadors of UC magazine, on an epic journey to win over the hearts of our worldwide membership, starting with north America. We want to let everyone in on the secret that is UC Magazine. As a community-made magazine, we are coming to meet YOU and connect our nation together, one community at a time.

On the road and now here in the room with me editing the day’s videos is Cat Buckout, the American Gladiator turned videographer. Yofred Moik is here too, sitting on the bed editing photos. He’s our photographer/driver/all around McGuyver. We on the team believe the magazine is a great resource to connect the Unification Church community by telling their stories.

Follow us this week on our exciting journey…WE’RE GOING TO CHICAGO.
